The biggest riser in the first round is a kid who continued to prove me wrong all season. It may seem as though sublime defender Cale Makar from the Brooks Bandits is simply a flavor-of-the-month kind of prospect because of the way he crushed a lesser-known league like the Alberta Junior Hockey League. It took a while, but I finally realized that questioning the level his competition, or his choosing to attend UMass-Amherst over bigger, tougher NCAA programs, is nitpicking at its finest. But times are changing, and the Big Leagues are desperately promoting speed and skill, two things Makar has in spades. Klim Kostin was a favorite player of mine in the preseason, but his draft year was as incomplete as they come. He followed up a dominant Ivan Hlinka tournament with a promotion to the KHL — a rarity for pre-draft teenagers. Stuck in a depth role that saw him play under 10 minutes a game, Kostin was demoted to a lower league before shutting his season down with a shoulder injury.
The rankings I began compiling as far back as August are not intended to be a blueprint for how the draft unfolds when it begins in Chicago on June 23rd.
GM Ron Hextall has been a draft master during his tenure in Philly, stacking picks and making nice selections. This year was no different with Noah Cates a raw Joe Pavelski type , big goalie Kirill Ustimenko and that kid who went second overall who might be pretty decent… All jokes aside, Hextall and his staff get lots of different skill sets and positional needs every draft, which puts them in a great spot for the future. Another notable dropper was Matthew Strome, who had to wait until the fourth round before Philly snapped up the big, smart scorer. Everyone knows that Strome and to a lesser extent Vilardi needs to iron out his footwork, but he was generally seen as a second-rounder.
But yet again, it feels like the team only tried to hit singles instead of taking a home run cut or two. For the second time in three years, Washington only made four selections.
Hischier quickly made himself known in New Jersey, as he took the ice immediately in 2017-18, and posted 52 points, which was the second-most on the team behind only Hall, who went on the win the 2018 Hart Trophy. His performance helped to call the Devils back into the playoffs, where they lost in the first round to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Nico Hischier was named captain of the New Jersey Devils in 2021. Injuries have slowed his production on the ice, as the 2021-22 season was the first time he managed to surpass his rookie scoring by playing 70 games and posting 60 points. Hischier is far from a bust, however. The offensively gifted forward was scoring at a torrid pace in the Western Hockey League WHL , and he had the size and total toolkit that general managers dream of when making a top selection. However, that can be expected from a teenager playing against men, so the future still looked bright.
In 2019 he was diagnosed with a non-hockey-related migraine disorder , which kept him out of hockey for more than 17 months. While he was expected to work his way back into a role for Philadelphia, the team decided to move on from him in the 2021 offseason, where they traded him to the Golden Knights. Now, Patrick finds himself in a tough position. While he has one-year remaining on the contract extension he signed with Vegas , the Golden Knights are looking to pinch every penny they can to be cap compliant once again. This could lead him to traded if he starts the 2022-23 season slowly, which may hurt his opportunities to excel alongside a playoff-caliber team. Miro Heiskanen — Dallas Stars With the third-overall pick, the Dallas Stars decided to take the first defenseman off the board by selecting Finnish prospect Miro Heiskanen. By taking on more the 23 minutes of ice-time each night as a rookie, he was a top candidate for the Calder Trophy despite lacking in scoring that often drives conversation surrounding that award. He consistently eats 23 to 25 minutes of ice-time each night, puts up needed points, and just acts as a stalwart on the blue line that every team dreams of. Given everything, this was a great selection by Dallas, as they have one of the top young defensemen locked down to a reasonable deal through his prime years.

2017 NHL Entry Draft Top 10: Where Are They Now?
Some have given up on him, but if he remains healthy he can still reach his potential. His frame means he can win pick battles and maintain possession, and his quick hands and creativity mean he can create chances. He is just as good as a setup man or a finisher. If he can round out his game and start to make the simple plays more consistently, he may end up higher on this list. However, the players above him have been more effective thus far. Standing at six-foot-three, 200 pounds, he is most effective below the hash marks where he can dictate play with his size, shot and vision. He also possesses a powerful release, making him a well-rounded threat. This season we will see whether or not Vilardi can fully recover from the injuries that have plagued his career thus far. He plays a simple but highly effective game, using his slick hands to carry the puck into vantage points where he can beat the goalie himself with or find a teammate with ease. He is a safe bet to be a second-line center, having produced well but not extraordinarily at all levels.
He is lethal in the offensive zone, hard to get off the puck and is an elite passer. Similar to Patrick and Vilardi, Glass is another big, talented Canadian centreman whose future is hard to project given his injury history. However, he has shown improvement at the pro level and he is too talented not to make the NHL. When the opposition inevitably closes in on him, he can also make space for himself with his creativity. He is a fluid skater, so he generates a lot of offense on the rush and he is effective on the powerplay. Despite having the fourth-most games played out of this class, the upside of the players above him is higher. Rather than trying to rush the puck every time, he identifies when he can burn the defender and when to make a play. He is also getting better at producing from a standstill and could play on the powerplay in the NHL. He is an elite skater who is incredibly poised with the puck on his stick.
Las Vegas must choose 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies. At least 20 of the players the Knights choose must be under contract for the 2017-18 season. That means he could accept a trade to refrain from selecting a specific player or to take on a bad contract.
A fast and dynamic skater with high-end puck skills, Hischier distinguished himself for his two-way diligence and his ability to contribute in every area of the ice and - by extension - the game. He possesses a high hockey IQ and is a very creative player combining both structure and innovation.
