Take Action Eugene V. The best-known apostle of industrial unionism in the early years of the 20th century, Debs ran for president of the United States on the Socialist Party ticket five times between 1900 and 1920, winning millions of votes. Although none of his dreams were realized during his lifetime, Debs inspired millions to believe in "the emancipation of the working class and the brotherhood of all mankind," and he helped spur the rise of industrial unionism and the adoption of progressive social and economic reforms.
Debs was born on Nov. At 16, he left school to work as a paint scraper in the Terre Haute railroad yards and quickly rose to a job as a locomotive fireman. Laid off during the depression of 1873, Debs eventually found another job as a clerk in the grocery business and never worked for the railroad again the rest of his life. But he did retain a close attachment to railroad work and railroad workers. When the BLF organized a local lodge in Terre Haute in 1875, Debs signed up as a charter member and was elected recording secretary. Following the great railroad strike of 1877—the first truly national strike in U.
For most of the 1880s, Debs continued to preach the virtues of industrial cooperation and to discourage confrontations with either employers or the government.
He was pardoned and released on Christmas Day, 1921 by President Harding at age 65. While his health was broken, his spirit and optimism remained indomitable. He remained an outspoken advocate for the cause of labor and the working class. Debs died in 1926 at the age of 70 in Elmhurst, Illinois. Debs lived an extraordinary life, one devoted to the cause of the average working man and woman. He was a true hero of the railroad workers of his time and remains one to this day, his name revered by railroad workers from coast-to-coast.

In the United States, this project has only ever been a variant of capitalist empire that, even when grafted to the cause of democracy, has been deeply inhospitable to the strategic thinking and moral fiber that can sustain the Left. Today, when the Left is often conscripted into a project to defend democracy rather than re-create it, Debs can still offer us guidance.
Recalling what Marxism taught Debs can show us how the dominant themes of American democratic discourse — especially its conceptions of property, freedom, and self-rule — do not provide a foothold for a democratic left. Instead, they obscure our path toward a just society at home and abroad. American Democracy vs.
When Debs called out the absurdity of the wartime view that patriotism means dying overseas for capitalist profits while treason consists in defending workers everywhere, he showed us the proper response to nationalist ideology: not to try to hijack it for progressive ends, but to liberate us from its obfuscations. Through the ordinary electoral process, a liberal party could fulfill working-class demands by curbing the political power of business, defending democratic rights and freedoms, and guiding capitalist growth according to an inclusive sense of the public good. Most of all, Schlesinger sought to show that Marxism was as foreign to Debs as it was to America.
Among the US left, he singled out Debs for praise because, in his view, Debs was always closer to liberal democratic Americanism than Marxist totalitarianism. And as an inveterate democrat, Debs could never accept the revolutionary Marxist program of proletarian class rule, nor could he sacrifice immediate associational freedoms for the sake of historical progress, both of which threatened a totalitarian takeover of democratic institutions. Theory alone would not have brought Debs to socialism if it did not clarify his experience in the labor movement.
Ultimately, Schlesinger saw Debs as a useful figure to make a broader argument about the place of the Left in progressive politics. Like Debs or so Schlesinger imagined , leftists should accept the basic justness of American democratic institutions, inhabiting a position of critical dissent that holds liberals to account without ever exercising real independent power. He also ran for President of the United States five times, once receiving nearly a million votes as a federal prisoner in the Atlanta Penitentiary. On June 16 1918 , after nearly a half century of union and political organizing — now in his 60s -- Debs gave a speech in Canton, Ohio in opposition to World War I. He was arrested under the Espionage Act of 1917. He was convicted, sentenced to serve ten years in prison and disenfranchised for life. Once again, the Supreme Court upheld his conviction.

Afterward, he founded the Industrial Workers of the World union. It was a weekly magazine that achieved high accolades due to his high pitch of writing.
In the mid of June in 1918, Eugene protested against the World War I where he came out with a negative speech. As a result, he was arrested and later convicted in court. Unfortunately, he founded himself behind bars for ten years. While in prison Debs was selected to vie for the presidency under Socialist party union. He received over a million votes, but Warren G. Harding took the seat.
Debs received a heroic welcome after serving his term in jail. He continued to write thousands of articles while still making important speeches.
