Out of 47 BE patients, 46 yielded nasal, nasopharyngeal swabbing samples and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid or bronchial aspirate samples of appropriate quality and were used in the analysis. Two healthy volunteers agreed to undergo bronchoscopy and their upper and lower respiratory tract samples were also included in the analysis. For the rest of the healthy volunteers used in further comparative analysis only the upper airway microbiomes were analysed.
