Miro Heiskanen — Dallas Stars With the third-overall pick, the Dallas Stars decided to take the first defenseman off the board by selecting Finnish prospect Miro Heiskanen. By taking on more the 23 minutes of ice-time each night as a rookie, he was a top candidate for the Calder Trophy despite lacking in scoring that often drives conversation surrounding that award. He consistently eats 23 to 25 minutes of ice-time each night, puts up needed points, and just acts as a stalwart on the blue line that every team dreams of. Given everything, this was a great selection by Dallas, as they have one of the top young defensemen locked down to a reasonable deal through his prime years.
Cale Makar — Colorado Avalanche To say that the 2016-17 season was an unmitigated disaster for the Colorado Avalanche would be a bit of an understatement. To start things off, then head coach Patrick Roy stepped down as head coach before the season even began, leaving the team little time to scramble and find a new skipper. Related: 2007 NHL Draft: 5 Forgotten Picks On the ice, the Avalanche finished dead last in the league , only mustering 48 points, which made them one of the worst teams of the cap era.
Off the ice, they had a disgruntled star in Matt Duchene who wanted to be traded. Finally, despite having the best odds to win the Draft Lottery, they ended up falling all the way to fourth. However, while this looked like a stroke of bad luck that would set the franchise back years, it ended up becoming a centerpiece of their rapid rebuild to glory.
This, of course, was due in no small part to their selection of Cale Makar. Needless to say, Cale Makar is a true superstar that will be a face of the NHL for years if not decades. However, he quickly went about proving any skeptics wrong by tearing up the NCAA and winning the 2019 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in college.
Next, he joined the team for the 2019 postseason, where he played 10 games and posted six points. Following this strong start, he went on to win the 2020 Calder Trophy as the top rookie of the year and then went on to dominate the league in 2021-22 en route to winning the Norris Trophy. Finally, he capped everything off by claiming the 2022 Stanley Cup and winning the Conn Smythe Award.
Needless to say, this pick will be a defining moment for the Avalanche over the next decade-plus. Somehow, by falling down the draft board, Colorado were able to still claim the best player of the 2022 Draft.

I like that; why risk missing on Morgan Frost or Isaac Ratcliffe if you really like them? GM Ron Hextall has been a draft master during his tenure in Philly, stacking picks and making nice selections. This year was no different with Noah Cates a raw Joe Pavelski type , big goalie Kirill Ustimenko and that kid who went second overall who might be pretty decent… All jokes aside, Hextall and his staff get lots of different skill sets and positional needs every draft, which puts them in a great spot for the future. Another notable dropper was Matthew Strome, who had to wait until the fourth round before Philly snapped up the big, smart scorer.
Everyone knows that Strome and to a lesser extent Vilardi needs to iron out his footwork, but he was generally seen as a second-rounder. But yet again, it feels like the team only tried to hit singles instead of taking a home run cut or two.
Despite having the fourth-most games played out of this class, the upside of the players above him is higher. Rather than trying to rush the puck every time, he identifies when he can burn the defender and when to make a play. He is also getting better at producing from a standstill and could play on the powerplay in the NHL. He is an elite skater who is incredibly poised with the puck on his stick.
The analytics rate him highly due to his efficiency at carrying the puck, but he will need to start using his standout puck skills to create offense to justify this ranking. This season he has thrived in an increased role. Marie Greyhounds, but he still projects as a top-six offensive talent in the NHL. He then exploded the next year and was one of the best players in the league and for Team Canada as they won gold at the World Juniors. His size and skill have turned him into a menace at the AHL level. His average footspeed is the only thing holding him back.
His offense has slowed down a bit after turning pro in his draft-year-plus-one season but has been playing tough matchups and killing penalties. He moves around very well for a big man, allowing him to break up plays and then join the ensuing rush. His average skating and one-dimensional game have been exposed and the high-end puck skills are yet to shine through. More time in the AHL could be helpful. He has a good, quick wrist shot and passes the puck well enough, but his lack of foot speed holds him back from being a truly dynamic player. Another player in this class who has struggled with injuries, he missed all of 2018-19 due to a concussion.
He played just 40 games in the AHL last year and really blossomed near the end of the season with 11 points in his last 13 games. At six-foot-two, 185-pounds, he could add some weight but has managed without it due to his smooth skating stride and four-way quickness. He already looks like a powerplay anchor-type, but we could very well not have seen the best of Timmins due to the injury problems.
We knew that about halfway through their respective rookie seasons. There were several picks where my board and the draft result were one or two placements apart but Suzuki is the only selection of the first round in 2017 that lined up exactly with my final ranking at the time. I went back and forth on Necas and Robert Thomas at No. I lean toward Necas today because I think his skill level grades out a little higher, even if his floor is still lower compared to Thomas. Thomas is the more complete player off the puck but Necas will win out long term with slightly more dynamic playmaking talent and a clear edge as a shot creator and puck carrier. Louis My final ranking: No. Thomas is a well-rounded, versatile player who can make things happen in all three zones and does a great job identifying his linemates and getting the puck to them through traffic and into space. Was I too high on him at the time? I still think he becomes a 60-plus point centre who offers size, high-end spatial awareness and reliability that teams covet in a top-six forward. He knows how to get the most out of his game and he has never needed burning speed or a lethal shot to do it. Advertisement Actual draft pick: No. He may not become a true No. He can be a lot of different things to a line. He can be its scorer and primary shot threat. He can be its go-to puck retrieval option and cycle presence. Or he can be its primary carrier and distributor. That would still be true even if he had played a full season in 2019-20 and thrived. That will help him have an impact offensively regardless of his linemates. Brannstrom has shown an ability to manufacture offence and create from the back end above and beyond his peers in Sweden and the AHL. It served to highlight concerns about his size and strength, both defensively and offensively in his ability to play with power in man-on-man battles or create the same havoc with his shot as he does with his ability to hit seams. But the Senators were awful this season and that makes evaluating most of their players — particularly the youngest ones — difficult. In Brannstrom, I see a zone exit and entry machine, a superb passer, enviable poise with the puck and just enough talent with his feet and stick to hold his own defensively. And though he became an immediate impact forward at the AHL level, he never really dictated play there as much as he should have given his skill set. His game is built for it. When he gets touches, he makes things happen. The Oilers need more players like him in their supporting cast, not less. I think both of those things can be true, even if I have to acknowledge the bias I have from being lower on Chytil than most over the years. He can skate.

Далее Жукенов постепенно терял место в основном составе, играл за «Омских Ястребов», а в прошлом сезоне в октябре был отправлен в Чехию «за практикой» вместе с Антоном Ковалёвым и Ильёй Дервуком. Пока Жукенов набирался опыта во второй! В итоге Дмитрий заканчивал сезон в Новокузнецке, а летом перешёл в систему «Автомобилиста», но пока центрфорвард прочно обосновался в «Горняке». Жукенову всего 22 года, по большому счёту, вся карьера впереди, но пока с каждым сезоном от «Ванкувера» хоккеист всё дальше и дальше, хотя прошло всего четыре года. По словам президента бело-голубых Михаила Головкова, Коростин плюнул на команду и под покровом ночи покинул расположение «Динамо». Сергей уехал в Прокопьевск, где делал американскую визу, готовился к сезону и даже провёл два матча за «Шахтёр». На счету Коростина ни одного матча в КХЛ. Вообще, если вспоминать драфт 2007 года, то нахлынет грусть — Черепанов трагически погиб, Руслан Башкиров и Максим Грачёв уже завершили карьеру, Каблуков и Гончаров до НХЛ не добрались, Майоров не пробился в состав «Коламбуса», и только Евгений Дадонов со второй попытки покорил «Флориду». В тренировочном лагере «Флориды» Дельнов после успешных выставочных матчей входил в число нападающих, на которых рассчитывал тренерский штаб, но в итоге контракт Александру не предложили из-за плохой физической готовности, и игрок вернулся в Россию. Лишь спустя годы выяснится, что Дельнова подвёл агент — несмотря на недовольство физической формой Александра, «Флорида» предлагала стороне хоккеиста двусторонний контракт, но до игрока данную информацию почему-то не довели.
