Movie of the Week: Pygmalion (1938)

He treated her as a living doll that he could, at any time, tire of and discard. Had he shown her any modicum of kindness, then I could understand why she might return to him. The film just made her forced training seem far too easy for her. She was even described as a quick student that could learn anything. And there was absolutely no portrayal of any strain to Higgins, himself.

He shows up for his first scene with Higgins, in which he extorts 5 pounds from him. Then he shows up at the end, dressed as a man of wealth.

The story was recycled in various literary and dramatic forms before George Bernard Shaw brought it lasting fame in his 1913 stage play.

Oddly enough, when Hollywood Oscars were awarded, Pygmalion copped all the screenwriting awards. Shaw had already seen her onstage as Eliza Doolittle in the Shaw Festival at Malvern, and was so impressed that he recommended her to Pascal. Anthony Asquith, who shared billing with his associate director and star, Leslie Howard, had not had a good film for several years.

But Pygmalion placed him firmly in the front rank of British directors for his brilliant handling of this delicately satirical material. And it enjoyed as much of a critical success as it was popular with audiences.

Pygmalion (1938)

As for Wendy Hiller, I honestly think that she could not compete with Audrey Hepburn, even if she was much more natural in several scenes than Audrey. The direction of Anthony Asquith and Leslie Howard who was, of course, also in the leading role was perfect and truthful to the story. I consider it one of the best films of the 1930s and it was a huge success at the box-office, in 1938.

This Mr. Shaw, for many years identified with the legitimate theater, the rotogravure section, and the Letters-to-the-Editor columns, appears to have had little difficulty adapting himself to the strange new medium of the cinema. Shaw is not revolutionizing the cinema in Pygmalion any more than he revolutionized the theater when he first put his comedy on in London in 1914. The film version is no more startling, providing you keep a straight face upon the matter, for the camera is frequently flushing a covey of actors from a conversational thicket and Mr. All this, of course, providing one keeps a straight face upon the matter. But Pygmalion is not a comedy for straight faces, and anyone who puts one on at the Astor should have his theater-going credentials examined and his sense of humor sent off for repairs. In the Shaw repertory, it is not one of the major items, so need not be taken too seriously. Taken lightly, as befits it, the comedy trips light from the tongue of any troupe—stage or screen— which has the grace to memorize its lines, to say them well and with appropriate gesture, while a good director clears or clutters up his sets and adds the precious element of timing.

The embassy ball is a new sequence, instead of an off-stage incident, and has been worked with suspense, comedy, and fresh dramatic interest. The Dustman is not entirely the towering comic figure he was. His plaintive speech about being the victim of middle-class morality has been retained, naturally; but they lopped him off a trifle at the end. Shaw truly has taught the American filmmakers something. But he must learn, too, not to let his cameras freeze too often upon a static scene. Asquith, based on the play by Mr. Black and white. Running time: 96 minutes.

The movie starred Wendy Hiller as Eliza Doolittle, a common, poor flower girl in London who has a chance encounter with an aristocrat who is a master of phonetics, Professor Henry Higgins, played by Leslie Howard. Higgins publicly humiliates and berates the girl for her uncouth Cockney accent and boasts that he could teach her to speak more genteel so well that he could pass her off as a proper lady. While Higgins continues to treat Eliza like a dirty commoner, Pickering treats her with kindness and gentleness. Higgins decides to make good on his boast and agrees to teach the girl. The performances from the actors were good enough, especially Hiller. However, I got the general feeling that the entire story was being rushed. Scenes and nuances that I felt could have been played slower for things like character development or plot believability were delivered quickly.

With intensive effort Eliza makes progress, and Higgins introduces her to his mother Marie Lohr while local gentleman Freddy David Tree falls in love with Eliza at first sight.

The big test looms at a gala event hosted by the Ambassador of Transylvania. An adaptation of the 1913 George Bernard Shaw play, Pygmalion boasts a witty, dynamic script, clashing characters, multiple attractive settings and brisk pacing. The film gently mocks both upper class haughtiness and working class contentment, with only Eliza possessing the courage to test the divide.

Howard looking younger than his 45 years brings an uncompromising edge to the role of a stubbornly confirmed batchelor refusing any accommodation in his approach to life.
