Разумеется, с нас брали официальную подписку о неразглашении, но собеседники и так ни о чем серьезном не говорили, понимая, что это открытые каналы связи.
Такие спокойные, бытовые разговоры. У нас было несколько человек с допусками. Zoom, Skype и прочие ВКС видео-конференц-связь — прим. ТАСС тогда еще не придумали, поэтому время от времени мы обеспечивали селекторные совещания. На станции оборудовали специальную переговорную комнату, куда приходил, допустим, министр сельского хозяйства Азербайджана со всеми заместителями, и глава союзного ведомства проводил с ними заочную конференцию. Я всякий раз поражался, насколько руководители из Москвы владели ситуацией в стране.
Досконально знали, что происходит на местах! Представляете, в СССР 15 республик, огромное хозяйство, а министр каждому задает точные вопросы, чуть ли не про конкретные колхозы и совхозы. И попробуй не ответить, тут же в порошок сотрет! Тогда умели отбирать и растить кадры. Не люди были, а монстры, настоящие профессионалы. Я слушал эти разговоры и учился… Но через несколько лет почувствовал, что засиделся на месте, застрял в развитии, и захотел перемен.
Вдруг появилась возможность поступить в Высшую школу профсоюзного движения при ВЦСПС Всесоюзный центральный совет профессиональных союзов — прим. Поехал на разведку, узнал, что нужно направление из республики, вернулся в Баку, собрал необходимые документы и опять отправился в Москву в полной уверенности, что с поступлением проблем не будет. Но оказалось, что конкурс среди абитуриентов сумасшедший, какие-то нереальные цифры. Желающие ехали со всей страны, и у каждого было такое же направление, как у меня. По сути, это был обычный экономический вуз с очной аспирантурой и сохранением заработной платы. Подразумевалось, что после учебы высококвалифицированные кадры возвратятся на прежнее место службы, но уже на руководящую работу.
Поэтому многие и стремились попасть в Высшую школу. Я в том числе. Хотя понимал: шансов поступить у меня мало. Надо было либо искать какой-то блат, "длинные волосатые руки", либо пытаться самому сдать вступительные экзамены на приличные отметки. С основными предметами я плюс-минус справился бы, смог бы подготовиться за оставшиеся три месяца, а вот с английским языком у меня было плоховато, честно говоря. В свое время, обучаясь в Баку в русской школе, я проделал такой трюк: в качестве иностранного языка сам себе записал… азербайджанский.
Пару лет учителя не обращали на это внимания, потом вдруг опомнились: азербайджанец, который учит родной язык как иностранный… В общем, какое-то время я валял дурака и заполучил проблемы с английским. Галина Ивановна хорошо ко мне относилась, поэтому не стала обнадеживать, объяснила как есть. Все равно терять было нечего, я очень хотел поступить. Обычная кирпичная девятиэтажка в районе Курского вокзала. Поднялся на этаж, позвонил в дверь. Открыла такая еврейская женщина, окинула меня взглядом с ног до головы: "Вам кого?
Вышел Жеребков. В махровом халате, в руке — мундштук с сигаретой. Посмотрел в мою сторону еще более критически: "Что вы хотите? Я продолжаю: "Может, посоветуете репетиторов? А как ваша фамилия? Как, допустим, паша, бей или бек".
Жеребков чуть смягчился, сказал: "Ладно, зайдите, проверю ваш уровень…" А что проверять? Знания-то почти нулевые. В глазах Вадима Александровича быстро появились безразличие и пустота: "Поступить все хотят, но экзамен принимает комиссия, поэтому, думаю, у вас нет шансов". Я понимал, что сейчас выгонят, и искал способ хоть за что-нибудь зацепиться. Вдруг заметил на столе много пепельниц. Разных размеров, форм и цветов.
Спросил наудачу: "Собираете? И тут меня озарило! Вспомнил, что у Муслима Магомаева, с которым я дружил, дома на рояле всегда стояли минимум две пепельницы. Он же курил как паровоз, по три-четыре пачки в день, и у него везде были пепельницы, которые дарили друзья. Я спросил Жеребкова: "А можно пополнить вашу коллекцию? У меня есть то, чего нет у вас".
От такого предложения Вадим Александрович отказаться не смог, это же не деньги, даже не алкоголь. Сказал: "Бери, сколько нужно. Мне уже некуда складывать". На следующий день я вернулся к профессору с большой коробкой… Он не мог поверить своим глазам. А уж когда услышал, что это подарок от Магомаева… Представьте, Жеребков занимался со мной три месяца и сумел поставить произношение, вынуждая раз за разом повторять фразы, пока не получалось идеально. Я воспринимал язык на слух, такую методику выбрал преподаватель.
Приходил я дважды в неделю на два часа, и за все время Вадим Александрович не взял с меня ни копейки, учил совершенно бескорыстно. Уникальнейший человек! Он посоветовал мне оксфордский самоучитель, где не было ни слова на русском. Я постоянно слушал кассеты в машине и в итоге смог сдать экзамен, поступил в аспирантуру. Пустая кассета стоила 120 рублей, а записанная — 300. Чистый навар — 180 рублей.
Статус имел большое значение. В почете были деятели культуры, партийные и хозяйственные руководители, директора заводов. Деньги сами по себе не гарантировали уважения. Двоюродный брат отца, мой дядя, работал управляющим комбината бытового обслуживания. Над ним все посмеивались, а он отвечал, что получает в несколько раз больше академиков и писателей, при этом подчеркивал, что прочел за жизнь одну книгу — "Мойдодыр". Да и ту не до конца… К дяде относились снисходительно, в табели о рангах он стоял ниже многих, хотя деньги греб лопатой, у него в подчинении были и фотоателье, и пошивочные мастерские, и те же студии звукозаписи...
Муслим незадолго до этого женился на Синявской, у них продолжался романтический период отношений. Тамара была то в Москве, то в Милане. Магомаев звонил мне и извиняющимся голосом говорил: "Араз, прости, что беспокою, но нам никак не удается связаться… Не выручишь? Нет, публика по-прежнему его обожала, но так называемые друзья, которые вились рядом, пока Магомаев был в зените славы, моментально исчезли, и я почувствовал, что ему нужна моральная поддержка. Еще у него есть вид на жительство в США, в 90-е сын провел там, наверное, лет семь или восемь. Учился, получил диплом бакалавра.
Мне тоже настойчиво предлагали грин-карту как… экстраординарной личности. Есть у американцев такой статус. На самом деле, забавная история. Нельзя запретить человеку сменить место работы, если ему предлагают более выгодный контракт. А я мог предложить. Мы тогда начали проводить в Москве компьютерную выставку Comtek, которая в какой-то момент стала третьей в мире по масштабам.
Словом, в один прекрасный день я прихожу в посольство США и мне отказывают в выдаче визы. Я звоню в Нью-Йорк и сообщаю, что не приеду. Мол, не пускают. На том конце провода шок. Россия в начале 90-х всех очень интересовала, на Западе думали, что здесь будет огромный рынок... Мы вас ждем". Говорят: "Советуем вам найти грамотного миграционного юриста и подать документы на грин-карту, чтобы перед каждой поездкой не оформлять визу. У вас есть все шансы получить вид на жительство". Признаться, я опешил. Спросил: "А на каком основании? Впервые услышал это выражение.
Оказывается, в исключительных случаях такой статус предоставляют выдающимся спортсменам, деятелям искусства, ученым, которые вызывают интерес у США. И крайне редко под программу попадают бизнесмены. Мол, это очень почетно. Но я-то не собирался жить в Штатах, и меня волновало, чтобы из-за грин-карты не пришлось платить американские налоги. Адвокаты заверили, что этого делать не понадобится. Я бываю в США от силы месяц в году.
По делам летаю, дочку навещаю. Она поехала вместе с Ириной, своей мамой и моей женой. Уехали, да так и остались. Четверть века пролетело... В отличие от нас с Эмином, который в начале нулевых вернулся в Россию, дочь и Ира давно стали американками, получили паспорта. Правда, русский язык не забывают.
