Вместо себя Роберт сосватал Тобаку своего лучшего друга - Кейтеля. И сразу начал меня удивлять. Воплощая характер Джимми он забрался в такие мрачные дебри подсознания, которые и не предполагались мной изначально" - признавался потом режиссёр.
Надо сказать, что Джеймс Тобак к теме раздвоенного сознания подступался ещё до "Пальцев". Его дебютом в качестве кино-сценариста стал фильм "Игрок" 1974. Это была более, чем вольная, фантазия на тему небезызвестного романа небезызвестного Фёдора Михалыча.
Но в "Игроке" дело с раздвоением зашло отнюдь не так далеко, как получилось с "Пальцами". Там университетский препод увлекался азартными играми и попал в серьёзную переделку. Герой "Игрока" не был шизофреником, у него были иного рода траблы.
Кстати, сценарий был прописан настолько правдоподобно и убедительно, что невольно закрадывалась мысль - уж не грешен ли сам сценарист, не поигрывает ли во всякое такое? Ответ: да, грешен. Сценарий был во-многом автобиографичен.
Кстати, в "Игроке" главную роль сыграл Джеймс Каан я считаю, что это его лучшая роль в карьере , а Тобак ещё тогда мечтал о Роберте де Ниро. Он даже добился от Рейша и де Ниро того, чтобы они встретились и обсудили этот вопрос. Но результат встречи ему вряд ли понравился: Рейш после разговора с де Ниро сказал Тобаку, чтобы больше он даже не заикался на эту тему, а если заикнётся, то он и Тобака выгонит из проекта.
Между прочим, через 40 лет "Игрок" тоже удостоился римейка. Но я его вам смотреть не советую. Лучше посмотрите оригинал Карела Рейша.
Он вас не разочарует. К великому сожалению, Джеймс Тобак после своего дебюта больше не снимет ничего даже отдалённо приближающегося к "Пальцам" по кинематографическим качествам, по оригинальности замысла и глубине воплощения. Это кино так и останется его единственным шедевром.
Похоже, что он там выложился как творец на все 100 проц. Без остатка. Выгорел как Джимми перед своим самым важным прослушиванием.
Дальше Тобака ждала череда неудач, которые я даже перечислять не хочу. Разве что его сценарий к "Багзи" 1991, режиссёр Барри Левинсон был номинирован на Оскар.
