The most extreme cars, like the MKB in our photographs, hammers past 600hp with ease, but the M113K V8 is very responsive to upgrades. Even a selection of basic modifications, comprising a smaller supercharger pulley, an ECU remap to suit and some cooling enhancements can yield around 540hp. Once the preserve of the well-heeled, the twin winds of time and depreciation now place the E55 AMG in front of a far wider audience. Best of all, there are changes to suit all tastes and budgets. The damping and springs use state-of-the-art micro-electronics to adapt instantaneously to the driving situation in hand. To this end, data is processed relating to the steering and yaw angle of the body, longitudinal and transverse acceleration, vehicle level and driving style. The desired suspension setting can also be selected manually through three stages, thus satisfying the most diverse customer preferences. The automatic level control system ensures identical spring travel all-round, even when the car is fully laden. Thanks to stronger stabilisers with 50-percent greater torsional rigidity, the roll angle of the E 55 AMG is only very slight when cornering at speed. New, reinforced steel rear axle with differential cooling The valuable experience gained over 35 years at the sharp end of car racing was a key component in the development of a power transmission system which features a larger cardan shaft, new steel rear axle with reinforced wheel location elements and drive shafts, and spring links made from a highly robust welded steel structure. The rear axle differential has cooling fins to lower the oil temperature by as much as 20 degrees Celsius. The high-strength, internally ventilated and perforated brake discs, which measure 360 x 36 millimetres at the front axle and 330 x 26 mm at the rear, deliver notable deceleration of 10.
The surface area of the eight-piston callipers at the front axle is almost twice the size of those on the Mercedes-Benz E 500. Among the key benefits of Sensotronic Brake Control are the extremely high braking pressure the system generates and its precise monitoring of the behaviour of both driver and car by means of a sophisticated sensor system. This innovative system thus considerably improves driving safety. For example: SBCTM recognises a hazardous situation and the onset of emergency braking by the speed with which the driver transfers his foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal, and reacts automatically.

Interior space is generous, and build quality is first rate. With so much power, cruising over long distances proves relaxing and rewarding. Through long bends, the E55 feels very stable, while the electronic brake set-up offers outstanding stopping ability.
Double-glazed windows, plus more soundproofing than the model it replaces, mean the cabin is quiet at high speed. Indeed, the only sound that accompanies you is the pleasing growl from those four exhausts. The ride is harsh, too, and - despite the versatility of the air-suspension - the Merc struggles to maintain composure on particularly challenging roads.

In wet weather, the system injects regular, short brake impulses to ensure that the film of water on the brake discs is wiped off and SBCTM can work as effectively as possible at all times. The brake impulses are precisely calculated so that the driver is not aware of them. SBC also offers higher levels of safety than a conventional system when braking through corners. Whilst conventional braking systems apply the same brake pressure ratio on the outer and inner wheels when cornering, SBC allows the brake force to be divided according to the situation in hand. Consequently, the system automatically increases the brake pressure on the outer wheels when cornering, as they produce more brake force by virtue of their greater contact forces.
At the same time, the brake force on the inner wheels is reduced. This increases lateral force on the car, which also plays an important role in keeping it on track. The result is more stable braking and optimum stopping distances The new Softstop function enhances braking comfort in city traffic Another comfort feature of the new braking system is the Softstop function, which allows the driver to come to a halt particularly smoothly — an extremely welcome antidote to the frequent stops and starts between traffic lights on city-centre roads. Finely calculated pressure control is the key, with SBCTM reducing the braking power as the Saloon comes to a standstill and thus preventing the jolt which can often be felt when coming to a halt. The Softstop function is permanently activated — only under emergency braking or when the driver is manoeuvring the car around does the system give rapid braking priority.
New 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design There were few problems finding sufficient room for the large braking system behind the new-design 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, which measure eight inches in width at the front axle and nine inches at the rear. Whilst the alluring, sterling-silver-painted wheels in twin-spoke design are certainly a stylistic highlight, they also ensure good brake cooling under heavy loads.

Максимальная мощность в 476 л. При создании двигателя объемом 5,5 литра использовались новейшие разработки тюнинговой компании AMG, принадлежащей Mercedes-Benz и базирующейся в Аффальтербахе, неподалеку от Штутгарта. Рекордные «мощь и тяга» силового агрегата — заслуга в основном нового механического компрессора, расположенного между цилиндрами и обеспечивающего давление в 0,9 бара. В компактный блок компрессора встроен эффективный интеркулер. Чтобы двигатель безболезненно справлялся с высокими нагрузками, дополнительно усилены картер, коленчатый вал и поршни. Оптимизированы также каналы головки блока цилиндров и седла клапанов. За эффективность «круговорота» масла в моторе отвечает более мощный масляный насос.
Тюнеры из «Ё-инжиниринг» полностью переработали внешность родстера, но оставили неизменной техническую начинку и салон автомобиля. SL 55 AMG щеголяет новыми бамперами, расширенными крыльями, новыми фарами и фонарями. На автомобиль установлены колёсные разноширокие диски Rennen с низкопрофильными шинами. Заявленный продавцом пробег автомобиля — 39 000 километров.
