2024 NHL Draft rankings: Mid-November top 40

Physically, he is very raw. His confidence and hockey sense allow him to make up for his below-average puck skills. He manages gaps well and positions himself correctly more often than not. This combined with his smooth skating and willingness to engage physically gives him a solid foundation as a defensive defenseman. Sennecke is really creative and will try just about anything to make a play. Sennecke is a very competitive player on the forecheck.

He could have a big finish to his season if things start to click for him. A reliable and towering presence on the backend, Emery has shown great aptitude for being a shutdown defenseman; especially when it comes to defending the rush, his anticipation combined with his superior speed and size make him a tough wall to climb. But what sets him apart from the similarly styled members of his team is his play on the puck. He also has flashes of skill that indicate there may be more offence to show, but his lack of ice time so far leaves them as flashes. A lot of his points have come off of one-touch plays off the cycle, but the occasional off-the-boards play while protecting the puck shows the potential for more, especially with his 6-foot-2, almost 200-pound frame. A rifle of a shot and a knack for finding soft ice away from the puck allow Greentree to make the most out of his scoring chances.

His playmaking shows up in flashes which follow his inconsistent scanning, and the skating holds him back from being able to jump into offensive zone transitions consistently, but the upside as a middle-six scoring winger with power-forward elements will likely see him go higher on draft day than we have him. An exceptional skater who consistently explodes out of the defensive zone with the puck on his stick, Basha has been getting more and more comfortable jumpstarting those breakout opportunities with defensive mapping, anticipating play well and positioning himself proactively in his own zone. On the puck, there are some limiting factors. The upside if he can get his hands up to speed is interesting, but his versatility could see him become a bottom-six transition force with or without progression in that area. He shows flashes of a strong offensive defenseman, especially with his good hands and shot. Time will tell what kind of prospect Mews can be.

If he puts everything together, he projects as an average-sized two-way defenseman who can play on a power play. He can play a fairly linear style, rarely using lateral movement and lane switches to create off the rush, preferring to delegate the bulk of the work in transition to his linemates while he crashes the slot. His snapshot is a good tool, especially on the powerplay. While there may not be any top 6 upside in Beaudoin, we see a projectable and valuable potential bottom six-piece in Beaudoin, with PP and PK value. Hemming can be a lethal scoring threat as he excels at finding soft spots where he can utilize his shot. What sets Hemming apart from the top forward prospects right now is the lack of variety in his game in the offensive zone.

He consistently opts for a shot in every situation, allowing opponents to anticipate his moves. He could elevate his offensive game to the next level by starting to pass the puck more and making his game a bit more unpredictable. He could also develop his game by exploring deceptive plays, as his current tendency to skate predictably between the blue line and right circle makes it easier for opponents to read his intentions and optimize their defensive approach. The decision-making, however, keeps him out of our first round for the moment. Yakemchuck loves to activate in transition, often carrying the puck and relying on short and efficient passes to move the puck down the ice. His above-average skating is evident in the way he can move around the offensive zone, in particular on the powerplay, where he strives.

That being said, with the good comes the bad with Yakemchuk. There have been a lot of inconsistencies in his game and tends to get tunnel vision when carrying the puck. In sustained pressure situations in the offensive zone, he often will shoot from all areas regardless of the quality of shot offered by his opponents. Furthermore, his defensive game as a whole needs quite a bit of refinement. Yakemchuk has some gap control issues and gets away with his inefficient pivot mechanics by using his reach to break up plays. More often than not Hage can be found cheating for offence, falling behind on plays and struggling to think on his feet.

However, the moments where things click are usually spectacular. Hage is an insanely talented dual-threat who has 1v5 jaw-dropping skill, but to stay in the first-round conversation, he will need to figure out how to tap into that skill more consistently. Not possessing an explosive stride, powerful shot, or dynamic style, Caswell makes his living as a shifty playmaker. He was among the most impressive defensive players not just forwards at the Hlinka-Gretzky in our viewings and has kept it up in league play in Finland. He has the makings of a future bottom-six and PK winger if his development trajectory continues at its current pace. With the puck on his stick, Sahlin Wallenius makes quick decisions under single-variable pressure and uses his mobility, handling, and anticipation to solve problems.

He has good situational awareness which has allowed him regular Liiga minutes as a defenseman which is always noteworthy for a draft eligible. His best tools are his shot and creativity in the offensive zone, especially during sustained pressure situations.

He looks pretty similar on the ice to his older brother Lane, but Cole is a more physical defender and scored more points with the U17 team than Lane did, despite having a significantly later birthday. He scored an impressive 23 points in 54 KHL games this season. Artamonov is a skilled winger with good speed and a willingness to battle for pucks in difficult areas that makes him a really fun player to watch. Good thing too, since his wrist shot and one-time are both serious weapons.

He absolutely dominated the Finnish U20 league to start the year and earned a callup to the Liiga where he has already scored a handful of pro goals. Hemming is great at skating through contact and protecting the puck, and his shot is clearly NHL caliber. He just barely measured in at 6-feet tall this season but he plays like someone several inches taller, constantly moving his feet and battling for possession along the boards and in front of his own net. He was great for Sweden at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup where I thought he defended the rush really well, especially when it came to shutting plays down with a well-placed stick check. Second Round: 33. He had an excellent start to the year with Chicoutimi, scoring 17 points in just 12 games, but slowed down for most of the season. I think his skating is the only thing holding him back from being a top-20 pick, but I think some continued improvement there should be enough for him to become an NHL player for a long time. Vanacker understands what he does well and plays a very adaptable game that I think could translate well in a middle-six role someday. Zether is a 6-foot-3, right-shot center who plays a relatively mistake-free game with a ton of puck skill and a really high compete level.

He is a very tenacious player away from the puck, constantly forechecking and battling and his size might be the only thing that could hold him back. I can see him becoming a Conor Garland-type of player who makes things happen through sheer endurance and force of will in an NHL middle-six. Luchanko has good skill with the puck and skates quite well, making him a dangerous player with the puck in transition. Luchanko reads plays really well and has that knack for timing and finding openings in defensive coverage that is difficult to teach. Cole Beaudoin, C, Barrie Colts OHL Cole Beaudoin is a strong two-way center who has shown good offense at the junior level but has some questions about his future offense as a pro given his sluggish skating stride. His hockey sense and stick checking often make up for his lack of footspeed in forechecking and backchecking situations, but he will need to get quicker to be as successful in the NHL someday. He scored just eight points in 56 USHL games last season, but he has shown some excellent growth this year, already tripling that production with a few games left on the schedule. Misa looks really quick in junior, winning tons of puck races and beating defenders out wide on the rush regularly. The biggest barrier for Misa at this point is simply his size.

At 5-foot-10 he struggles to play through contact against larger competitors and relies heavily on his speed, which, to his credit, does work quite well in the OHL. He battles hard along the boards and never quits on a back-check. Shuravin is someone I could see rising into the first round of the draft because a mobile defenseman of his size with great defensive potential is very valuable, even if his offense never shines. He would absolutely be a project player, but the size and work ethic will excite NHL GMs and both his hands and shot are good enough that you can see him becoming a bottom-six guy in the NHL with skating improvements. Dean Letourneau, C, St. Dean Letourneau, St. Andrews College Paul Mosey, St. Miettinen is a big center 6-foot-3 who is very dangerous offensively because of his powerful skating and quick hands. He creates a lot of chances at the junior level, and can do so from anywhere on the ice.

Buium has grown at least one inch since last season which bodes well for his draft stock since his biggest weakness at this point is his physical play. Luckily for Buium, he is an excellent skater and has plenty of hockey sense which allows him to defend incredibly well in the NCAA, and will likely help him in the NHL as well. He has good skill with the puck but his calling card will be his skating and sense which he uses to his advantage best on the rush both as a passer and a scoring threat. His performance for the Gold medal winning American team was great and I think that level of success from an 18-year-old will draw a ton of NHL attention. He plays a similar style to his brother, with lots of physical engagement and a penchant for taking big point shots, but he appears to be a better and more confident skater at the same age. Adam produces a ton of chances on offense from the blueline, readily activating into play to support his teammates and keep the puck moving.

Jiricek is really great at scanning the play off puck and he persists through pressure quite well so I think he will be able to cut down on the over-the-top risks in time. I like him as a two-way defensive prospect and his right-handed shot and 6-foot-2 frame will help him out on draft day. The biggest thing holding him back this year was a major injury that has kept him out of the lineup since he sustained it in the first game of the World Juniors in December. After scoring just 18 points with the Seattle Thunderbirds last season, spending portions of the season being scratched, Iginla has flourished with the Kelowna Rockets. Regardless, he works hard and is often the first guy in on the forecheck.

Once the top-12 or so prospects are off the board, Iginla will be the next best option for a team looking to add some speed and goal scoring, things that are always in short supply. Aron Kiviharju, LD, HIFK Liiga Aron Kiviharju has been the most talked about 2024 Draft eligible prospect over the two or three years, after playing most of his age-15 season in the top U20 junior league in Finland, scoring roughly a point per game as a small defenseman. He is an excellent puck handler in transition and walks the blue-line very confidently in the offensive zone. Kiviharju suffered a knee injury in a practice this Fall that led him to miss the majority of his draft year. Kiviharju is a really intelligent puck mover, controlling play with a poise beyond his years.

He finished the season in the top 20 for goals and points in the OHL which is really impressive for a draft eligible player on a weaker team. Greentree does most things well, fighting hard in puck battles, making smart passes, and handling defensive responsibilities well. His greatest strength is his shot which looks like a quality NHL tool though his skill with the puck is noteworthy as well. The biggest barrier in the way of NHL success for Greentree at the moment is his skating. His hands are really quick and he plays with a ton of deception which made him one of the most dangerous offensive players in the entire USHL this season.

Many NHL teams have reportedly expressed concern in drafting him due to an incident involving him posting a picture of a swastika on social media a little over a year ago. However, he can get a bit of tunnel vision and try to play hero-puck a bit, losing sight of the best play and turning the puck over by trying to deke too much. He has some work to do filling out his rather skinny 6-foot-3 frame, but there is some real promise in his offensive game. Chernyshov plays a very direct style, charging the net frequently whether he has the puck or not. He has had a rather slow start to this year production-wise, but his skill set looks well designed for the pro game with the ability to make strong plays and smart decisions at a higher pace than most teenagers.

He has a really well-rounded tool kit as a 6-foot-1 center who skates well, has excellent skill with the puck and can create chances at will in the USHL. Ultimately, a lack of elite traits holds him back a little but Hage certainly has a chance to be a top-six forward in the NHL. The 12th overall pick in the 2022 QMJHL Draft was excellent in the USHL last year as a rookie with 45 points in 57 games, and he looks poised to improve on those numbers significantly this season. Boisvert is a big center 6-foot-2 with tons of skill with the puck and above average skating. Ritchie has a ton of skill and can be a daunting offensive force, slipping between checkers and making plays, but his consistency has left something to be desired this year.

He bullies opponents along the boards, easily strips them of possession, and makes small-area passes to open teammates with an ease and accuracy that leaves his opponents scrambling to keep up. In the KHL, much of the same remains, but he has also shown a whole lot of adaptability despite the limited ice-time. He tracks back, finds his check, and sticks to him. Despite making his debut in the Liiga at just 16 years old, his development has encountered some setbacks. He thinks the game on a level only few can. He anticipates plays exceptionally well and makes smart decisions with and without the puck. His defensive game relies heavily on his stick work and the physical side of the game is something he really needs to work on. That said, his tools forced our hand in keeping him inside our top 15.

He uses his physicality intelligently too, always looking to separate player from puck. Most of those pertain to the mental side of the game. From missing secondary scoring threats to becoming a deer in the headlights under pressure while stationary, Jiricek has a few hurdles to overcome, but we have seen enough flashes to believe that there is a real chance he does so. His tenacious presence on the forecheck often leads to turnovers which he quickly turns into scoring chances with accurate passes. He is a legitimately dangerous playmaker thanks to his precise puck handling and ability to get passes through lanes. He also has a strong understanding of space and timing, particularly in the offensive zone. This puts him in a good position to score on a regular basis although his finishing is only about average. His strong work ethic allows him to overcome an inefficient stride that ultimately limits his top speed.

That being said, improvements in his skating technique could unlock more upside in transition. He is a very effective playmaker making passes from behind the net as well and off the half wall. Despite his small frame, he will win puck battles by using his speed and competitiveness. Misa is supremely tenacious and will backcheck hard to try to force as many turnovers as he can. Combine that with poor size and just good skill and this is probably what separates him from a player like Zach Benson in 2023. Ritchie has very quick feet and hands with excellent puckhandling posture, making him an excellent puck carrier. Especially when given time and space to attack downhill, Ritchie is particularly adept at using those hands to find the middle of the ice for high-quality chances. Ritchie is also an effective positionally-focused player, using great puck spacing and support in all three zones and prioritizing strong body positioning before establishing puck possession.

The next steps for Ritchie will be improving his standstill explosiveness and checking lanes which hinders his ability to win puck battles and adding more layers of deception to his playmaking. Ritchie has a good read of where his options are but too often telegraphs his intentions, making many of his passes unnecessarily risky. If Ritchie can improve in these areas and continue to develop, he could challenge Catton and Lindstrom for a top WHL draft-eligible. Besides the name pedigree, Iginla is an easy player to root for. His habits away from the puck are a definite strength, from his frequent scanning, active stick, good forechecking routes and hard-nosed backchecking. He gets off the wall to the middle quickly, and can also drift into high-danger areas, and when paired with his lightning-quick snapshot, makes him a dangerous goal scorer. Iginla might lack the high-end dynamism of some of the other WHLers in this class, but his combination of all-around skills and pro-level habits make him a good bet to be a contributing NHLer. He constantly tries to take on opponents one-on-one, pushes through checks with shoulder drops and great puck placement, and always goes for the throat with his offensive zone incursions.

A major difference between Connelly last year versus this year, is that he is trusting his teammates a lot more to complete his plays. As a result, his playmaking game has grown and he has adopted a distributor role that fits his skillset better than the finisher role he was trying to force last year. His defensive game is lacklustre; his motor is very inconsistent, and there have been major questions regarding his character that will likely have some teams very hesitant to bet on his upside, no matter how high it is. Developing a more mature game and showing whoever picks him that he can improve will be essential if he is going to reach his top-line ceiling. He is clicking at a goal per game and 30 points in 18 matches played as of writing this. Beyond the point totals, however, what makes Parascak so interesting is the way he puts up those points. A vast majority of the points he has produced so far have come from the low slot and off one-touch plays, which seems strange at first given how poor his skating is. Perfectly-timed inside cuts, one-touch passes and net drives put him and his teammates in prime scoring real estate almost every shift, and he has also improved his long-range scoring to complement his short-range threat.

His trademark mobility is as present as ever and is now employing multiple layers of deception at multiple levels. His passing game is remarkable, as he is able to identify soft ice regularly even at this intermediate level. He has become much better at anticipating play, and become a rather proficient stick-checker as well. He has plenty of time to get there, and he looks plenty impressive as is.

From talking to a few WHL defenders, Lindstrom might be the most feared player in a 1-on-1 situation due to his combination of speed, skill and pure mass.

The upside here is enormous — literally. The big draw is his mobility, which allows him to move more like someone five inches shorter. He can be a bit slow to move the puck at points and game-to-game consistency needs improvement, but the potential for Silayev to become much more than just a skating skyscraper is tantalizing. After a fantastic rookie season with Spokane, Catton — one of the best playmakers in the draft — is on pace to break the 100-point barrier this year. But the younger brother of Columbus Blue Jackets prospect David Jiricek is still getting the chance to play against pros, where his decision-making with the puck has looked solid.

Jiricek is aggressive and can shoot with power, but his skating needs work — just like David at the same age. He scored 21 goals as a rookie last year which was bonkers. He started off slow, but Kiviharju had points in his final two games as his ice time started to improve. Yakemchuk is skilled with the puck and makes smart decisions with the puck, but his defensive game can be a struggle sometimes. But at 6-foot-3 with his strong footwork, NHL teams will be excited.

He has hovered around the goal-a-game mark for most of the season, needing just 10 games to match his 48-game run with the WHL champions Seattle last year. Beyond the scoresheet, Iginla is flashy, defensively reliable and can land a big hit, too. Sounds a little like someone we might remember. As an October 2005 birthdate, the Norweigan forward has already been playing against pros in the second-tier Swedish league, showcasing a relentless forecheck every single game. For a nearly 200-pound winger, Chernyshov moves well, with and without the puck.

Preliminary 2024 NHL Draft Rankings

Tij Iginla, RW, Red Deer Rebels — Bloodlines run deeper than we thought as he has looked so much more dominant this season playing a prime role with the Rebels and showcasing a pro shot. Trevor Connelly, C, Tri-City Storm — Slick puck skill and creativity, fluid and quick skating, impressive vision all on display early this season. Slipping — These prospects have not carried over their initial performances that earned them higher rankings or have been overtaken by prospects who are rising in our eyes. Clarke Caswell, C, Swift Current Broncos — Continues to slide down our board after an initial impressive World Under-17 Hockey Challenge performance for Canada even though he flashes some strong playmaking. Justin Poirier, RW, Baie-Comeau Drakkar — The small but highly skilled forward can take over a game but only when he wants to and so far there have been too many lazy looking shifts to start the season.

His release is fantastic, he gets the puck off crisply, quickly, and with a high level of accuracy even if it is away from his body or in his feet. His hockey IQ is impressive, he is virtually never out of position and seemingly knows where everyone is on ice at all times. He is also a legitimate power-forward, who likes to throw his weight around and get to the net-front. On the boards he regularly dominates men 15 years his senior. Defensively he is also impressive, with an active stick and the ability to win most 1-v-1 battles.

His skating is solid, but will need to get more explosive. Additionally, while his vision is fantastic, he does not always connect on pass attempts, and will likely never be a high-end play-maker. But make no mistake, he has the potential to be one of the premier two-way wingers in the NHL. He uses the threat of his shot very effectively to create passing lanes for his teammates to move into. He plays a very intelligent game which sees him attack the middle often and quite successfully as he leverages a combination of his high-level stickhandling and physical tools. The knock on his game thus far has been his quirky staking style, but it seems to be improving with each game, and he still has good speed in-spite of his mechanics. Additionally, he has proven to be quite the effective penalty killer for Windsor, and this is a result of his excellent stick movement, often eliminating passing lanes in the defensive zone and helping create passing options in the offensive zone. Similarly to Misa, he looks to pray on the vulnerable and does a great job of stick lifting and poke checking to cause disruption in puck possession. Iginla does well at feathering passes in tight and does a good job with puck security when being pursued by multiple attackers at close proximity.

Iginla has second line upside and could be deployed at center or wing without losing a step. But make no mistake, the Nizhnekamsk native has been one of the best three Russian forwards amongst his age-group for the last couple of years. This year however? He has taken a giant leap, and is playing at a level in the KHL that very few draft eligibles ever achieve. Artamonov belies the outdated stereotype of the skilled, Russian winger who only plays in the offensive zone. He is an energiser bunny. Voracious on the fore-check, diligent in the defensive zone, with an active stick that constantly disrupts lanes. Furthermore, while no-one would mistake him for a physical player, he is more than happy to go to the corners or net-front. He is a great skater and a fantastic passer, alongside this his ability to get free ice in the offensive zone is exceptional.

The downsides? He has extremely good speed for his size especially his lateral speed that allows him to shift positioning when he is slighly further away from where he needs to be when defending against the rush. Silyaev uses his reach and size to take up space. While this ranking might seem relatively low to where others have Silayev, the offensive upside of Artamonov, Iginla, Misa, Greentree and others in the 10-20 range made it a challenge for the Smaht team to push Silayev up higher. Josh Tessler 18 — Trevor Connelly, F, Tri-City Trevor Connelly does a good job of not forcing the puck into danger and will pivot away from pressure to get the separation that he needs to complete a pass to the interior. When driving the cycle to find a lane to the slot, he does a good job of navigating the puck around pressure with his reach and great handling. He will work the puck along the boards and scan for passing lanes to get the puck to an open teammate in the slot. If he has the puck and a teammate is close by with an attacker looking on, he will delay, draw the attacker to him and then pass to his teammate who is now open with a clear lane to the crease. Hemming has them all.

He can be a juggernaut even against men in Liiga, able to use his speed, edge-work, pick-handling and size in conjunction to drop a shoulder and get past anyone. Even at 17 years old against men, Hemming has an incredible transition game. His wrist-shot is lethal to boot, and he is able to pick a corner from anywhere on ice. While he has the size he rarely uses it, and plays on the perimeter. Defensively he gets lost far too often, and his consistency is also worrying, as even against his own age-group he can go missing for long stretches. There is the upside for him to be a 30 goal scorer in the NHL if he can iron out these kinks. Boisvert will toe drag to get separation and then quickly make use of a passing lane. He has a great shot off of the rush and has found success sniping far side top shelf goals from low danger. His dangling and toe drags have helped light the lamp in Muskegon regularly.

Is this simply a case of the spotlight being so strong, for so long, that his weaknesses have been magnified? The answer is probably no. There are legitimate concerns over his game. He is undersized, he is not the best skater, and early this season a knee injury that required surgery has put him out for four months. Kiviharju is expected to be healthy again in February.

Either way, I see him running a top power play unit. He has excellent hockey IQ and a high-level vision and playmaking allow him to find open teammates and rack up assists while still being a threat to score. Helenius has five goals and 10 points in 17 games this season, which is just a point shy of his total through 33 games last season. So, what does this mean for Adam? Absolutely nothing!

Remember Fedor Fedorov? Joel Lundqvist? Steve Kariya? Jiricek is a mobile two-way defenceman who has good poise for his age, very good vision, and loves to shoot from the blue line. He also protects the puck well when he has it on his stick and positions himself well on the defensive side. Jiricek projects as a top-four two-way defenceman at the NHL level.

Not to be forgotten is he also has a very good shot. In his rookie season in the OHL, Mews scored 12 goals and 31 points in 55 games.

2024 NHL Draft Rankings – Horn’s Top 100 for April

The 12-16 seed team that won the first drawing is also locked into their new position. Like the first drawing, the second winner can only jump ten spots, but this time it is using the re-seeded order following the first drawing. This second drawing will not affect the team s with locked-in positions from the first drawing.

The team that selects first overall will be getting a game-breaking talent and likely a franchise forward to build around. Of all the rankings I looked at, only EliteProspects. Eiserman is an elite goal-scorer, likely the best in this draft class, and can play at high speeds which bodes well for transitioning to the NHL. Eiserman came very close to breaking that record last season but came just shy with 69 in 62 games between the U17 and U18 teams. No rankings I looked at have him lower than third. He drives the offence, as evidenced by his 19 goals and 62 points through 41 games in the MHL last season. Once he finds some stability, the points will surely follow. With a December birthday, Demidov is on the older side of first-year-eligible draft prospects.

That said, the wait could be worth it as he could end up being a top-line scorer at the NHL level. NCAA Artyom Levshunov ranks anywhere in the four to six range, but I like him at the high end of that range, right after the big three. He skates well, can move the puck, and his shot is a real scoring threat. Levshunov currently has three goals and seven points through eight games. His skill set and ability to adapt could help him become a top-pair two-way defenceman at the NHL level.

If a team in the 12-16 range wins the first drawing, the first pick will be awarded to the worst team. The 12-16 seed team that won the first drawing is also locked into their new position. Like the first drawing, the second winner can only jump ten spots, but this time it is using the re-seeded order following the first drawing.
