Beginning in the late 1960s to the present, his work has played a major role in advancing the tradition of modern abstract sculpture in the aftermath of Minimalism. He explored how an art work might relate intimately to a specific setting; how it might take up a physical as well as a visual relationship to a viewer; and how it might create spaces or environments in which a viewer can experience universal qualities of weight, gravity, agility, and even a kind of meditative repose. His work has thus unwittingly inspired a host of counter-responses by subsequent generations, who, decidedly in rejection of his histrionic example, turned in the late 1970s and 1980s toward more ephemeral, everyday materials to suggest that art could be monumental without relying on massive, "in your face" substances and formats. Serra took many years of artistic explorations to arrive at such forms.
Oscillating mainly between weathering steel and stainless steel, he gradually erected metal plates to build architectural installations that are both imposing due to their immensity - they reached 78 feet high in Qatar in 2011 - and enveloping because of their shapes - they feature straight lines, such as the rectangular, triangular or trapezoidal structures, or curved ones, like spirals, waves, semi-circles... The scale of these structures determines the flow of visitors and transforms their spatial experience, to the point of losing them in their labyrinthine meanderings.
Still, one characteristic color remains, that of the rust of weathering steel, also known as Corten steel, which has eventually become his signature. The term sublime is to be understood in its original meaning, as the artwork raises our awareness about the fragility of mankind in the face of the omnipotence of the world, in the manner of 19th-century German Romantic painters, such as Caspar David Friedrich. It was there, under the guidance of renowned abstract painter Josef Albers , that Serra developed a superior knowledge of the art world. In order to support himself during his studies, Serra worked in steel mills, without realizing that this experience would be the driving force of his later success as a sculptor. In 1964, Serra went to Paris for a year to explore his creativity. Robert Morris, one of the leading figures in the movement, invited Serra to participate in a group exhibition at the Castelli Warehouse, giving him the chance to work with artists such as Donald Judd and Dan Flavin.
Serra, however, did not feel connected to the basic ideas of the Minimalists. He wanted to set himself apart from the rest of the group.
Yet, in one of the higher brow neighborhoods in America, there were, basically, no good general bookstores in the 1980s or early 1990s. But then in the mid-1990s, suddenly there were book superstores and Amazon online. Anyway, Mr.
