The day that I have been dreading. Each year the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar includes one of the least exciting builds of the batch in the form of a weapons rack, and Day 16 is finally assembling that miniature build. This is a much larger creation that on top of packing in the functionality of holding up the included blaster and providing some space to store the extra studs that are included, it just looks great. The TIE Interceptor has rarely seen the brick-built treatment as of late, and now the latest holiday countdown addition is assembling a miniature version. The design still packs in all of the iconic features including its slopped fines and the circular cockpit. Hopefully things get a little better as the final days of the countdown draw near. The actual design is pretty solid, too! All of the signature aspects are there, including the folding wings and the signature cockpit up top.
The tiny build arrives with the signature orange color scheme and manages to pack in some grey accenting to go alongside the detailed thrusters on the back. The design is instantly recognizable despite the altered color scheme, with some interesting part usage being levied to pull off the iconic building. While not one of the founding members, Mantis has certainly become a fan favorite and now builders have another chance to bring her to their collections. Mantis also comes with a guitar to complete the Day 13 action. Arriving as yet another all-new figure, the Summer Vacation Darth Vader comes decked out in fit perfect for soaking up some sun. The small creation stacks up to a table covered in food and drinks, in what is at least a nice follow up to the turkey and stove build we got a few days back. All told, this has to be one of the worst inclusions in the Advent Calendar so far.
The sleek white design really shows through and is only made better by the bits orange accenting. I adore how much detail the designer was able to fit in, giving us an obscure yet perfectly-executed vehicle.
On Day 21, we get a rather basic table, with a gold goblet, a green bottle and a turkey drumstick. On Day 21. With 4 days left, they hit us with some food. At least it looks festive but at this stage in the Advent Calendar you really should be ramping up and building hype as we approach Christmas Eve, not apply the emergency brakes like this.
Oh well, check back tomorrow to see what we get on Day 22. Imagine if we get a pair of chairs! On Day 22, we get Wong, who is all over the MCU thanks to his ability to open portals and be everywhere, all at once. He comes with a Tesseract , a powerful mystical artifact that holds the Space Stone. This one is quite clever conceptually, and I appreciate that they managed to combine a festive component with an Avengers reference in a way that makes plenty of sense. On the plus side, the minifigure department is pretty decent, and I love that we get Spider-Man and Black Widow in ugly Christmas sweaters. Just getting his Hammer on the Fireplace is such a missed opportunity, and the lack of Loki is also very noticeable, especially as he has a throne. That said, 7 big-name characters are pretty good, and sorta make up for the lackluster days and builds.
