Her uncle was journalist George Seldes. Career Trained for the stage, Seldes made her Broadway theatre debut in 1948 in a production of Medea. She went on to an illustrious career in which she earned five Tony Award nominations, winning her first time out in 1967 for A Delicate Balance. In addition to performing in live theatre, Seldes began acting in television in 1952 in a Hallmark Hall of Fame production that marked the first of many guest star roles.
She and her siblings studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse. In 1953 Seldes married the actor Julian Claman, with whom she had one daughter, Katharine, before the couple divorced in 1961. In 1990, she married writer and director Garson Kanin.

In a career spanning six decades, Seldes performed in film, television and radio but was most celebrated for her theatre work, making her Broadway debut in 1948 in the Robinson Jeffers adaptation of "Medea," directed by John Gielgud and starring Judith Anderson in the title role. Seldes earned five Tony nominations, winning the award her first time out in 1967 for her supporting role in "A Delicate Balance" by the playwright Edward Albee, with whom she had a long association.

On stage, her manner was a similar sui generis mix of histrionic mannerisms, theatrical elocution, poised technique and warm naturalism. She was generally accounted a good actress, if a highly stylized one. Perhaps no one else in the theatre could get away with the outsized gestures she executed. She did particularly well in the arch, wordy world of playwright Edward Albee. She won a Tony Award for the part of an hysterical daughter dealing with negligent, distracted parents in the Broadway premiere of A Delicate Balance in 1967. Seldes, a veteran of Albee productions, gives irresistibly watchable life to the contention that we always reinvent our own pasts. What would I do?
